I think you have more stuff than I do!!
You should put a pack n play on there (a fold up, portable playpen). It's nice for bringing places when visiting to use as a crib for naps/night.
You'll also want a gentler laundry soap. I only use it until the first box/bottle is done, and then I just use ours, but they have sensitive versions of most of the laundry soaps. I'm using the Ivory one right now.
Can't think of anything else just this moment!
Ooh, bum cream.
My advice? When you have that baby, in the hospital (and after, it lasts a few days), be sure to smear vaseline all over his little bum (and other assorted bits) at each diaper change - it makes the ooey gooey black gross meconium WAY WAY WAY easier to wipe off at the next diaper change. That stuff's gross.
Thanks Tiffany!
I didn't think I had so much stuff either... But once you start writing it all down, it adds up! What's nice is that we are borrowing a number of baby items, so not only do we not have to shell out for them, but also don't have to store them after either!
I think you're pretty much set, aside from the couple of things Tiffany mentioned. As long as you've got the things to get you started, Walmart is never too far away. :) At least where we live.
I know you have the diaper starter kit on your wish list, but do you have diapers and wipes to get you started? Cause that you may need. :)
I keep thinking of things to add, I think this is it. My advice about the diapers is not to get too many newborn ones (if you're using disposables at all, not sure how the cloth ones work). Babies grow fast! (at least mine do)
That is a big list! But babies need a lot of stuff. I think you've got it covered.
Play pens are great. Once they start rolling around you need to be able to put them in a safe place to sleep. I got mine at a garage sale. I think it was $30 and in great condition.
Baby shopping is fun hey?
Candice - one BIG piece of advice for you: I assume you're planning on breastfeeding, but seriously, have formula/bottles just in case. When I was pregnant I got free samples from nestle baby and heinz. Actually, what worked really well was this 8 pack of pre-mixed, ready to feed little 3 ounce jars. It came with a nipple top and everything.
Nursing is great, but you can't always assume it will be flawless. I have a friend here in town who tried to breastfeed both her sons, and her milk never came - at all. She tried for days and days, and she just never got any milk, let-down, engorgement or anything, there just wasn't any.
Not that I'm saying take the easy way out when things get tough, but you never know, and it's good to be prepared.
Jordan had jaundice pretty bad when we brought her home (looking back I don't know why they didn't keep her for a day or two longer), and it made her really sleepy. I'd just get her latched on, and she'd doze off, and drop the nipple and then I'd try to wake her up, or she'd wake up on her own and just scream. Then she'd be too worked up to latch on and she'd cry and cry some more. Then I'd be tense, worked up and crying myself (which doesn't help, especially when your nipples are raw) and she was crying, and at 4 am none of this is fun. One night we finally gave her a few ounces in a bottle (you can pump for this purpose too) and she downed it so fast. It filled her up a little, calmed her down, and allowed for better nursing.
Just saying. :)
I'm with Ange on the diapers. Buy only one bag of newborns, and then if you want to stock up a little, get size ones. Those newborn diapers are so TINY and certain brands are smaller still and some newbies won't even fit into them that well. That being said, definitely get a couple of bags of 1s if you don't want to run out in the days following coming home. Babies poop A LOT. You'll be going through a dozen a day for sure, so your little bag of 20 diapers? Ha!
If it turns out you have a nice tiny baby Tom can always run and grab another bag of NB ones if the 1s are too big!
This post is so fun!
Thanks Candice!! I wish I had an unlimited baby gift budget, I love baby gift packages esp for new mommies! oh my goodness that list is exhausting when you write it all down. It's true there is so much stuff, it looks crazy when its all wrote out. The girls got you covered I think. If I think of more I'll send you something in the mail ;). oh, went to chg boys diapers and thot of something. sounds like you haven't bought the G system yet. I looked into it once too. Just a heads up, with bought diapers we went thru newborns, size 1, size 2 in prob the first 4ish months, so you go thru those the fastest. Then 3,4,5 last for longer periods. Just in case you wanna buy certain sizes/quantities of G?
By Bunting bag, do you mean the car seat insert? We bought one that didn't work with our car seat (the side impact wings by the head got in the way). Wonder if we still have it, i'll check :). So we just put Caden in and bundled with blankets over the seat. If you haven't heard this yet - Best not to put him in the seat with a winter snowsuit or jacket, too puffy, safer if the belt is closest to his body. thanks again, its helpful!
Thanks for all the advice, girls!
Sounds like I should definitely add a Pack-n-Play to the garage sale list.
Also, great point Lyla! I'll have to look closer into which sizes of gDiapers (tiny, small, medium, large) are equivalent to disposable sizes to understand better how many of each we'd need.
I would just **LOVE** to do the gDiaper thing (there's so many great things about it!!), but it looks like the only way it's possible is if we get some of the pieces as a gift(s). Otherwise, the initial cost is going to be too high to justify... That's why it's sitting on the 'wish list', not the 'need to get' list.
I'd be up for purchasing used gDiaper pants as well! I've been watching on ebay/kijij ect...
ya, I know one friend here turned to cloth with her 2nd child, but she got them for very cheap from a friend or free (can't remember), that'd be the way to go! I calculated in the summer i think for just one stage and the cost was skyrocketing. I know over 2 to 2 1/2 yrs you would save money, but its that initial investment. Plus the environmental relief impact, it'd feel real nice to not throw out the diapers to sit in the landfill for years on end!! :)
You also don't have to slather on the diaper cream with good quality cloth... Which adds to the savings and (I'd imagine) better for babe. But yeah, initial investments... :(
